Sugar holiday
Today was the first day of the holiday following Ramadan, affectionately referred to as "sugar holiday". After 30 days of fasting, everyone is celebrating. For the kids that means a week of candy and money. For the past several days the stores have been fully stocked with every kind of chocolate and candy you could ever imagine. I wish I had taken pictures. Now the bins of candy are running low. This week is kind of like halloween, thanksgiving and christmas all rolled into one. The neighborhood kids can expect to be fully spoiled by everyone they encounter. They can even go door to door wishing strangers a happy holiday and expecting candy and/or money in return. Schools are closed all week. Many businesses are even shut down. It really is a fun holiday atmosphere seeing families out shopping together and visiting friends and family. Makes me want to turn on Christmas music...but it's only September!
